  7. The MacMag virus appeared in December, 1987. This virus is also known
  8.  
  9. as the ‚ÄúDrew,‚Äù ‚ÄúBrandow,‚Äù ‚ÄúAldus,‚Äù and ‚ÄúPeace‚Äù virus. It was named
  10.  
  11. after the Montreal offices of MacMag magazine, from where it originated.

  15. Unlike the other viruses, MacMag does not infect applications, only
  16.  
  17. System files. It originated as a HyperCard stack named ‚ÄúNew Apple
  18.  
  19. Products.‚Äù The stack contained some exceptionally poorly digitized
  20.  
  21. pictures of the then new Apple scanner. When the stack was run, the virus
  22.  
  23. spread to the currently active System file. When other floppy disks
  24.  
  25. containing System files were subsequently inserted in a floppy disk drive,
  26.  
  27. the virus spread to the System files on the floppies.

  31. Since applications are not infected by MacMag, it spreads much more
  32.  
  33. slowly than the other viruses (because people share System files much
  34.  
  35. less frequently than they share applications). Even though the virus
  36.  
  37. originated on a HyperCard stack, it does not spread to other stacks, only
  38.  
  39. to System files.

  43. MacMag was programmed to wait until March 2, 1988, the anniversary
  44.  
  45. of the introduction of the Mac II. The first time the system was started up
  46.  
  47. on March 2, 1988, the virus displayed a message of peace on the screen
  48.  
  49. and then deleted itself from the System file.

  53. Since MacMag was programmed to self-destruct, it is unlikely that your
  54.  
  55. software is infected with this virus. Disinfectant will nevertheless
  56.  
  57. recognize it and repair infected files just in case you have some very old
  58.  
  59. disks which might still be infected.

  63. Disinfectant repairs both infected System files and infected copies of the
  64.  
  65. original HyperCard stack. If you try to run the repaired stack, HyperCard
  66.  
  67. will issue an error message.

  71. There were two slightly different versions of MacMag. The differences
  72.  
  73. were very minor and both versions were programmed to behave
  74.  
  75. identically. Disinfectant properly detects and repairs both versions.
